Grzegorz Sztwiertnia "Farbenlehre" - exhibition
Krakow, The Art Bunker Gallery, June 14 - July 28, 2002
languages: Polish  / English

"Farbenlehre" will be made up of site-specific arrangements, paintings, and installations using slide and video projections. The exhibition will be accompanied by a special, two-volume publication.

FARBENLEHRE, an exhibition of the works of Grzegorz Sztwiertnia, works well with the program of Krakow's Art Bunker (Bunkier Sztuki), one of whose aims is to present the work of the most interesting artists of the young generation.

FARBENLEHRE consists of the most recent work of an artist who has consistently expanded on issues of the body and identity, focusing primarily, however, on psychophysical dependencies and the mechanisms by which they operate. The title of the exhibition refers to the famous color theory formulated by Johann Wolfgang Goethe, used by Rudolf Steiner in developing the principles of his eurhythmics. Eurhythmics was a relatively innovative (by early 20th century standards) system of stage actions, based on highly original research into voice, gesture, movement, light, and color, and on the links and relationships between these components of stagecraft.

They were also the basic inspiration for Sztwiertnia's development of his main project titled "EURHYTHMICON", which resulted from close observation and analysis of a mentally impaired boy whose behavior (typical movements, penetrating vocal expressions), given its perfection and natural precision, reminded the artist of a forgotten ritual. The exhibition will also include a presentation of a special system of actions based on a new language created using the eurhythmic elements described above.

Another important theme of the exhibition will revolve around the issue of subconscious perception and reaction to colors. The works that seek to examine this subject are based on a color analysis of the distorted cornea, a method often used in assessing required correction of vision. From the point of view of Sztwiertnia - founder of the Synoptic Clinic and creator of modern "mental prosthetics" - medical science and aesthetic theory are the raw materials which, subjected to transposition and deconstruction, in the artist's words transform into an ephemeral visual spectacle.

"FARBENLEHRE" will be made up of site-specific arrangements, paintings, and installations using slide and video projections. The exhibition will be accompanied by a special, two-volume publication. Grzegorz Sztwiertnia (born 1968 in Cieszyn) studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow from 1987 to 1992 in the studio of Professor Jerzy Nowosielski. He lives and works in Krakow and creates primarily paintings and installations. Recent solo exhibitions have included STAINLESS, Bumper Gallery (Galeria Zderzak) in Krakow in 2001 and "KREATURY / CREATURES", Sector I Gallery (Galeria Sektor I), Upper Silesian Cultural Center (Gornoslaskie Centrum Kultury), Katowice, 2001. Sztwiertnia also took part in a series of group exhibitions in 2002 at the New Factory (Nowa Fabryka), Theatre 347, and in Paris.

This exhibition is a component of the 2002 edition of the NOVART.PL festival of young art.
