Antoni Starczewski (1924-2000)
Lodz, Museum of Art, December 18, 2002 - March 30, 2003
An exhibition of the paintings, ceramic sculptures, fabrics, prints, drawings, installations, musical recordings, and documentation of Antoni Starczewski (1924-2000), a professor of the Academy of Fine Arts in Lodz and one of Poland's most interesting contemporary artists. He developed his own, original "alphabet" of signs and symbols that he then used in repetitive compositional arrangements on ceramic objects, prints, fabrics, and, unusually, in his music. His search for an abstract, modular, system of signs and symbols is akin in many ways to works exemplary of the international movement known as Letterism. Antoni Starczewski graduated from the State Higher School of the Visual Arts in Lodz in 1951. He went on to win numerous domestic and international awards, including distinctions at the International Graphic Design Biennial in Tokyo, in Florence and Krakow, as well as at ceramic design competitions in Faenza. Exhibition opening: December 17, 2002, 6 p.m. Museum of Art (Muzeum Sztuki) ul. Wieckowskiego 36, Lodz tel. (+48 42) 633 97 90-91 www.muzeumsztuki.lodz.pl |
