The exhibition SPACE IN COLLAGES, COLLAGES IN SPACE, organized to mark the fifth anniversary of the passing of Wladyslaw Hasior, will consist of works by Ilona Binarsch, Ewa Dyakowska-Berbeka, Marcin Berdyszak, Piotr Bies, Viktor Hulik, Leszek Knaflewski, Piotr Kurka, Kamil Kuskowski and Andrzej Szarek.

Wladyslaw Hasior (1928-1999) enjoys a unique position in Polish contemporary art. A sculptor, creator of spatial forms, action artist, scenery designer, and educator, he is considered to have been among the originators of Polish Pop Art. Midway through the 1950s he began creating assemblages out of mass-produced, everyday use items, which he arrayed strangely to create unusual meanings. He readily admitted to being inspired by the magic of objects, their singular "quiet lives." His works seem to exude the poetic of the Galician provinces, and contain Christian iconographic motifs, national symbols, echoes of martyrology and tragedy. Around 1965 the artist created his first "Sztandary" / "Banners," resembling church feretories in form, in which he combined dignified, high-toned inspirations with everyday reality and its banal aesthetics. Hasior's singular monuments and monumental outdoor sculptures constitute an important part of his output. This group of works includes "ROZSTRZELANYM ZAKLADNIKOM W NOWYM SACZU / TO THE EXECUTED HOSTAGES IN NOWY SACZ", "OGNISTE PTAKI / FIREBIRDS" in Szczecin, "PLOMIENNE PTAKI / FLAMING BIRDS" in Koszalin, and "SLONECZNY RYDWAN / SUN CHARIOT" in Södertalje, Sweden. Hasior used relatively singular materials in creating them, including concrete, scrap metal, humongous metal wheels, various mechanisms and the power and expressiveness inherent in the elements of wind, fire and water. In the 1980s the artist created the series "PORTRETY / PORTRAITS", consisting of monumental figures that reference early "galleries of ancestors." Wladyslaw Hasior lived and worked in the mountain resort of Zakopane, where he also operated his own gallery as a branch of the Tatra Mountain Museum.

Exhibition opening: July 9, 2004, at 5 p.m.
