"Masterpieces of Polish Painting in the Collection of the Lviv Gallery of Art
Sopot, State Gallery of Art, June 19 - July 29, 2003
The Lviv Gallery of Art is an institution that primarily operates on the basis of the former collections of the Municipal Gallery of the National Ossolinski Institute in Lviv. After World War II, its collections expanded to include numerous artworks deriving from, among others, more than a dozen other large collections of western European art. This exhibition, drawing on the collection of more than ten thousand items amassed in the Gallery, will consist of fifty works by fifty outstanding Polish artists who lived and worked between the end of the 18th century and the end of the 20th. The idea for the exhibition is to make works of Polish art accessible to members of the Polish public and to create possibilities for deepening specialized knowledge about the Lviv collections. The exhibition ARCYDZIELA MALARSTWA POLSKIEGO W ZBIORACH LWOWSKIEJ GALERII SZTUKI / MASTERPIECES OF POLISH PAINTING IN THE COLLECTION OF THE LVIV GALLERY OF ART will include works by Olga Boznanska, Jozef Brandt, Jozef Chelmonski, Jozef Czapski, Artur Grottger, Wojciech Kossak, Jacek Malczewski, Jan Matejko, Henryk Rodakowski, Wladyslaw Slewinski and Leon Wyczolkowski among others. During its near one-hundred-year existence, the Gallery has grown to become a large institution that incorporates more than a dozen branches and venues. Some of its more important branches include the castles in Olesko, Podhorce and Zloczow as well the Potocki Family Palace in Lviv. Its collection of artworks, which includes paintings, sculptures, watercolors, pastels, drawings, etchings, old prints, furniture, and archeological artifacts, has grown from approximately four thousand items in 1914 to over fifty thousand in 2002. During recent years, items from the Gallery have been included in over three hundred exhibitions organized by Polish museums. The largest of these have included HUCULSZCZYZNA / THE HUTSUL REGION, KOZACZYZNA / THE COSSACK REGION, CHLOPI W SZTUCE POLSKIEJ / PEASANTS IN POLISH ART, GDZIE WSCHOD SPOTYKA ZACHOD / WHERE EAST MEETS WEST, MALARZY POLSKICH PORTRET WLASNY / THE SELF-PORTRAIT OF POLISH PAINTERS, TWORCZOSC K.
