Lukasz Korolkiewicz
CURTAIN OF DARKNESS, 1983
The paintings of Lukasz Korolkiewicz exude an atmosphere steeped in the metaphysical dimension of human life and all that surrounds it. Fascinated with color and the play of light and shadow, he creates poetic, magic visions of human privacy that reflect both his experiences and emotional states. His illustrations of the mystery and beauty of the world are simultaneously a record of things ephemeral and the melancholy that derives from them. The "mystery of the imperceptible" – this seems to be the most frequent subject of his works.

"Beyond surface realities, psychological states lie hidden,” says the artist, “and they are, I think, the true subject of my paintings.” Korolkiewicz seems truly stunned by the world of children, within which the garden is a symbolic place. Surface beauty, realistically represented, is a cover for disquiet, the frown of irony, the hints of bitterness that lie beneath. While Poland was under Martial Law, the artist created a highly moving series of paintings that depict flowered crosses on gray pavement tiles and flag stones, and empty, dirty courtyards in which dilapidated walls bear signs of freshly painted over graffiti that was clearly a protest against political repressions and hypocrisy. The tense, mysterious mood of Korolkiewicz’s large format paintings is further underlined by the reflections that he depicts – evident in water surfaces, windowpanes, mirrors, and in glass lenses. The artist’s exhibition at the Zacheta National Contemporary Art Gallery in Warsaw consists of over one hundred of his works from various periods, beginning with those created in the 1970s, which most often depict scenes from the life of the artistic boheme in Warsaw, through his most recent works. Most of the works on view are from the artist’s studio, the remaining ones have been borrowed from museums and private collections.

Lukasz Korolkiewicz was born in 1948 in Warsaw. He studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw and obtained his diploma from the studio of Professor Stefan Gierowski in 1971. He has been lecturing in the Industrial Design Department of his alma mater since 1980 and became a full professor in 1996. Korolkiewicz has exhibited in the United States, England, Sweden, and in numerous cities in Poland. In 1983 he received the “Solidarity” Independent Culture Committee Award, while in 1991 the artist won the Jan Cybis Prize.
