Stanislaw Fijalkowski, one of Poland's most outstanding contemporary artists, has not yet had a sizeable monographic exhibition. In November of 2002 the artist celebrated his eightieth birthday. Fijalkowski was a student of Wladyslaw Strzeminski and, graduated from, and subsequently taught for many years at, the Higher School of the Visual Arts in Lodz. He is an unusually interesting painter and graphic artist and has authored many series of paintings, including "Autostrady" / "Highways," "Studia talmudyczne" / "Talmudic Studies" and "Obrazy dla Walerii" / "Paintings for Valerie." Fijalkowski has been a strong presence on the art scene since 1957. He has represented Poland on the international arena on many occasions and won many a prestigious award.

This retrospective exhibition shows the many creative stages through which the artist passed, from the time he met Wladyslaw Strzeminski as a student through his newest works. The presentation will be accompanied by a catalogue, a monograph on the artist's work that will consist of a textual section and reproductions of a representative selection of his works. This will be the first such expansive publication devoted to this renowned and outstanding artist. Following its premiere at the National Museum in Poznan, the exhibition will travel to the "Zacheta" State Art Gallery and the Wroclaw branch of the National Museum.

It will consist of around 200 compositions in oil and watercolors on paper, as well as a selection of approximately 100 prints. The works derive from the artist's own collection, a series of Polish museums, and a number of private collections based in Poland and abroad.

Exhibition opening: April 26, 2003, 6 p.m.
