Boleslaw Cybis (1895-1957) - monographic exhibition
Warsaw, National Museum, September 21 - November 3, 2002
languages: Polski  / English

The exhibition presents works created by the artist between 1915 and 1939, the delimiting point being Boleslaw Cybis's departure for the United States of America in 1939.

Boleslaw Cybis PRIMAVERA, 1936
The life and works of Boleslaw Cybis can be easily divided into four periods: Russian (1895-1919), Turkish (1920-1922), Polish (1923-1939), and American (1939-1957). The tumultuous events of the beginning of the last century greatly influenced his path through life: with the advent of the Russian Revolution he was forced to depart for Turkey, and later the outbreak of World War II was Cybis's reason for remaining in the United States, where he would live out the rest of his life.

The paintings, drawings, and handful of sculptures included in the exhibition derive from the collection of the artist's family and have never before been made available to the public. Many of the works on view were found in Cybis's pre-war studio, known as the Pacowka. Made up of around 200 of the artist's works, the family's collection includes some of his earliest pieces, created while he was a student at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kharkov. It additionally encompasses the artist's drawings and watercolors dating from 1919-1922, at which time Cybis was in Constantinople, and his paintings, prints and drawings dating from 1922-1939, by which time the artist was a teacher at the School of Fine Arts in Warsaw and a member of the Brotherhood of Saint Lucas. The collection as a whole includes works from all of the artist's major creative periods, including many of his early Futurist and Cubist compositions.

Boleslaw Cybis SPOTKANIE, 1927
For the Warsaw exhibition, these works have been supplemented with paintings, drawings, prints, and sculptures (300 pieces in total) from the collections of a series of Polish museums - among them the branches of the National Museum in Warsaw, Szczecin, and Gdansk, and regional museums in Torun, Bydgoszcz, and Lublin - and an abundance of documents and artifacts. From among the latter, items that have been preserved to this day include the artist's letters, journal, and numerous certificates, diplomas, and photographs.

Exhibition opening: September 20, 2002, 6 p.m.
