Tomasz Ciecierski "A Pact with Painting "
Krakow, "Art Bunker" Gallery, November 8 - December 14, 2003
An exhibition of the works of one of Poland's most outstanding middle generation painters. A PACT WITH PAINTING demonstrates the way in which Ciecierski's consciousness as a painter was shaped and the point at which his artistic identity resides today. The exhibit will include works created between the early 1970s and the 1980s, as well as his most recent achievements dating from 2000-2003. On view will be the artist's individual oil paintings as well as paintings that Ciecierski combines to create objects. Both will be juxtaposed with the artist's preparatory drawings and sketches, as the idea for the exhibition is to confront Ciecierski's paintings against his drawings - his fast sketches against the full freedom of imagination apparent in his canvasses. A one-day conference focusing on the art of painting - its possibilities in the face of the multiplicity of media, its outstanding position and excellence in the past - will accompany the exhibition, as will a monograph publication on the artist and his work. Ciecierski seems far more interested in the process of creation than in art itself. In 1975-1976 he painted a series of works titled "OBRAZY ALOGICZNE / ANTI-LOGICAL PAINTINGS". A part of the surface of each painting in this series is covered by a nearly photo-realistic landscape, while the remainder is filled with abstract, "anti-logical" signs. In the 1980s and 1990s he created a series of paintings that combine sketch-like drawings with concrete painterly forms. The artist also makes broad use of the picture-in-picture technique that derives from Surrealism ("DÉJA VU" series dating from 1986-1987). Exhibition opening: November 7, 2003, 6 p.m. "Art Bunker" Contemporary Art Gallery Galeria Sztuki Wspolczesnej "Bunkier Sztuki" pl.
