The INTERNATIONAL CONTEMPORARY CHAMBER MUSIC COMPETITION in Krakow aims to promote talented young musicians and to popularize Polish contemporary music.

The INTERNATIONAL CONTEMPORARY CHAMBER MUSIC COMPETITION in Krakow aims to promote talented young musicians and to popularize Polish contemporary music. Young virtuosos under the age of thirty are invited to participate and entrants arrive from all around the world. The competition repertoire must consist of two freely chosen contemporary works, the sole proviso being that one of the selected pieces must be by a Polish composer. Auditions are held at the "Florianka" Concert Hall (8 Basztowa Street) and are open to the public. Awards will be bestowed upon winners during a Final Gala Concert at the Krakow Philharmonic (1 Zwierzyniecka Street). The jury for this year's edition of the competition is composed of Marek Stachowski - rector of the Academy of Music in Krakow, Marta Ptaszynska - composer and percussionist, pianist Lydia Wong, trombonist Paul Patterson, and violinist Yaring Walta.

Competition auditions: "Florianka" Concert Hall, September 10 - September 13, 2003, 11 a.m.

The Final Gala, Krakow Philharmonic, September 14, 2003, 7 p.m.

The Final Gala will feature special guests Eighth Blackbird in their first-ever appearance in Europe. The group is considered to be the best American ensemble specializing in the performance of contemporary music. This is confirmed by the many prizes it has garnered at numerous competitions and festivals of prestige. Significant awards have included the Naumburg Chamber Music Award, the Channel Classic Recording Prize, the Rockport Chamber Music Festival Prize, and the grand prizes in the Coleman Chamber Music Competition and the Fischoff National Music Competition. The ensemble is composed of Matthew Albert (violin and viola), Molly Alicia Barth (flute), Matthew I. Duvall (percussion), Lisa Kaplan (piano), Michael J. Maccaferri (clarinet), Nicholas Photinos (cello). In performing contemporary music, ensemble members are inspired by rock, jazz, and world music alike. Their concerts are enthralling for the group's original interpretations and fresh performance style; the ensemble is capable of generating unique moods that mesmerize listeners possessing a wide variety of musical tastes.
