This unique exhibition presents the work of ground breaking 20th century Polish theatre director and artist Tadeusz Kantor, alongside that of younger Polish artists Pawel Althamer, Katarzyna Kozyra, Robert Kusmirowski and Artur Zmijewski. The works in the exhibition include a variety of media - sculpture, performance, installation, photography and video - they all engage with ideas of performance. Taken from a huge canon of his works, this show includes many of Kantor's early preparatory drawings, props and documentaries of happenings and includes his wonderful "Sea Concerto", in which a conductor "directs" the natural sounds of the sea. Kantor's revolutionary approach to performance is reflected in the work of the contemporary Polish artists who are exhibited alongside him. Robert Kusmirowski is well known for sculptures that mimic reality, and for this exhibition he has made a replica of an empty classroom, inspired by Kantor's play "The Dead Class / Umarla klasa". Artur Zmijewski has made a number of films and photographs that show the physically or mentally disabled overcoming their handicaps. His contribution to the exhibition includes the "Singing Lesson II" (2003), a video in which a group of hearing-impaired youths are taught to sing a cantata by Bach. Like Kantor, Pawel Althamer is a multi-disciplinary artist, who creates sculptures, actions and installations that use humour and alienation to examine aspects of contemporary life. His contribution to the exhibition is a specially conceived performance entitled "Staff en Plein Air", in which security staff of Zacheta Gallery in Warsaw will become an artwork in themselves. They will travel to London where they will experience the cultural life of the city and will replace "The Curve" staff for one day (3 February). Katarzyna Kozyra investigates issues surrounding identity, cultural taboos and transgression. In "In Art Dreams Come True", her work created for "The Curve", she continues her ongoing series of outrageous performances as an opera diva. The performance embraces the possibility of failure and humiliation. "The Impossible Theatre" has been organised by Kunsthalle Wien in collaboration with Barbican Art Gallery and Zacheta - National Gallery Of Art, Warsaw. Pawel Althamer and Katarzyna Kozyra performances for "The Curve" co-produced by Barbican Art Gallery in association with the Polish Cultural Institute. In May "The Impossible Theatre will travel to Poland (Zacheta - National Gallery Of Art: May 9 - July 2, 2006) and afterwards to Vienna, Austria. |
