"Obviously Cases of Madness Do Happen In Asylums This Isolated"
Milan, Federico Bianchi Contemporary, May 3 - June 26, 2010
"Obviously Cases of Madness Do Happen In Asylums This Isolated"
Via Imbonati 12, Milano
The work, composed of five episodes, is a found-footage project with the scenes coming from the legendary Polish TV-series from the 70s, "Szaleństwo Majki Skowron" ("Madness of Majka Skowron"). The main character of the series, played by the artist at 14, lives a new life travelling in time and space through cult movies from 1968 to this day. Zuzanna Janin makes Majka Skowron meet and confront with main characters of movies like "Pulp Fiction", "Alien", "Apocalypse Now" and films by directors like Michelangelo Antonioni, Quentin Tarantino, Roman Polański and Andrey Tarkowski. In addition to the footage from the TV-series, some scenes were shot especially for the project in Tokio, Miami, London and Warsaw, with Mel, Janin’s young daughter, impersonating Majka. The site-specific installation is inspired by the novel "Solaris" by Stanislaw Lem. The artist creates a fantastic setting where the work "Dreaming of Speed and Adventures", composed of car models, interacts with sculptures madefrom bricks, pebbles, socks and other materials in an imaginary spaceship setting. Zuzanna Janin continues her search for identity reflecting on the loss of heroes in postmodern culture, based on quotation and repetition. Choosing Majka as the protagonist of her video project, Zuzanna Janin explores adolescence in the world where individual, cultural and social identity continuously changes. What characterizes the artist is the constant use of indefinite spaces where meanings collide and overlap: the borders of visible and perceivable are bound and made unstable, while those ephemeral and indefinite are balanced. Opening of the exhibition: May 3, 2010, at 6:30 PM. Exhibition runs through June 26, 2010. Federico Bianchi ContemporarySource: www.lokal30.pl |
