Anna Molska & Wojtek Bąkowski "Completed"
Germany, Freiburg, Kunstverein Freiburg, September 18 - November 8, 2009
Anna Molska & Wojtek Bąkowski "Completed"
Dreisamstrasse 21, Freiburg The exhibition consists of a film work entitled "Completed" (2009), a collaborative work by Anna Molska and Wojtek Bąkowski. The artists plan to present the work in the main space of the institutionas a two-part video installation. Two large scale, double-sided projection screens, 320 x 427 cm, face each other at a distance allowing visitors to view the film in between the screens. On each screen different sequences from a colour film are projected backed by a sound track.
The film, which lasts approx. 20 mins, was shot at Bemowo airport in Warsaw. Several men, wearing mp3-players and sitting on mobile chairs specially designed by Anna Molska, are moving as a group on the apron of the airport. Sitting in their silver chairs on castor wheels, dressed identically in black trousers and white t-shirts, the men appear as isolated individuals uncertainly constituting a group. They receive simultaneous instructions as to how they should move from the mp3-players. The instructions are not audible over the soundtrack for the exhibition visitor, so the choreography of their movements seems to be remote-controlled. In this work the participating men are the center of a system of space, time and action. The individuals are isolated by their personal response to the instructions received by them all. They are concentrating on an inner voice which separates them from the public world around them. The actions of each person refer solipsistically only to himself despite the fact that the viewer perceives him in the context of the group. The dramatic impact of the film is emphasised by the bleak surroundings of the Polish landscape. The movie was produced by Zachęta National Gallery of Art, Deutsche Bank Polska S.A. and Deutsche Bank Foundation. This is the first solo show in the Germany by the participating artists. There will be an artist's talk with Anna Molska on September 19, 2009. On October 5, 2009, Adam Szymczyk, the director of the Kunsthalle Basel is invited to give a lecture on the occasion of the exhibition. Kunstverein Freiburg Source: Press release |
