Zbigniew Rybczyński and Umberto Eco in the Louvre
Paris, Auditorium du Louvre and Cinéma Le Denfert, November 19 and November 21, 2009
Zbigniew Rybczyński and Umberto Eco in the Louvre
In November, Institute Polonais in Paris has something special for all fans of experimental cinema, but fans of theory shall be satisfied too. The films of Polish film-maker and multi-media artist, Zbigniew Rybczyński, will be shown in Paris on November 19 and November 21 during two screenings. The first screening which will take place at the Auditorium hall of the Louvre will be also stage of another important development: a lecture delivered by Umberto Eco, the famous Italian philosopher and novelist. The film screenings are programmed for two days. On November 19, the spectators will have an opportunity to see films like the famous "Tango" which in 1983 won the Oscar Award for the best animated short, as well as excerpts from the series "The Orchestra". Earlier that night the artist and philosopher will give introductory lectures, entitled respectively, "Vertige dans l'Image" and "Vertige de la liste". The parallels between the work of Rybczyński and Eco are numerous. For one, Umberto Eco considered "Orchestra" a successful attempt at interpreting music by means of images. This is the case of "Bolero", the film illustrating the well-known piece by Maurice Ravel, which will be screened later that night. It shows a bunch of people mounting an endless stair-case and forming a kind of broad panorama of human types. But the similarities don't end here. Rybczyński's films consistently attempt to create a sort of Heraclitan cinema in which the images are always in a state of permanent flux. They explore the technical and thematical possibilities of collage, and play with the theoretically proliferate concepts of a list and repetition. These themes happen to be also the major areas of Eco's interest. The meeting with the artist and philosopher will be held at the Auditorium du Louvre at 8:00 p.m. It will be hosted by Elise Domenach of Etudes Cinématographiques ENS-LSH. The review will be continued on Saturday (November 21) at the Cinéma Le Denfert with films and music videos made by Rybczyński in USA in the 80's. The films will include "Kwadrat / The Square" (1973), "Zupa / The Soup" (1973), "Nowa książka / A New Book" and many more (1975). The screening is organized by The Polish Institute in Paris in partnership with Association française du cinéma d'animation (Afca) i Cinéma Le Denfert.
