On January 9, 2004, the Sejm of the Polish Republic declared 2004 to be The Year of Witold Lutoslawski. February 7th of this year marked the tenth anniversary of the death of this great twentieth century composer.
In its resolution, the Sejm underlined that Witold Lutoslawski was one of Poland’s most outstanding composers, as well as a leading figure in the realm of music of the twentieth century:
"Witold Lutoslawski passed away on February 7, 1994. He was one of Poland’s most outstanding composers, as well as a leading figure in the realm of music of the twentieth century. He was a great authority, a patriot, an educator of many generations of musicians and listeners. He was also a model of modesty, a highly cultured individual, someone who demanded much of himself and others.
In honoring the memory of this great artist, and convinced of the great significance of his achievements to world and national heritage, the Sejm of the Polish Republic hereby declares 2004 the Year of Witold Lutoslawski."
February 4, 2004, Warsaw - On the initiative of the Towarzystwo im. Witolda Lutoslawskiego (Witold Lutoslawski Society) and the Mayor of the Capital City of Warsaw, a plaque commemorating Witold Lutoslawski was unveiled on the building located at 39 Smiala Street in Warsaw. The plaque, financed by the Office of Municipal Promotion, was designed and produced by Z. Wilma and B. Chmielewski.

VI Konkurs kompozytorski im. Witolda Lutoslawskiego / 6th Witold Lutoslawski Composing Competition.
A competition open to composers of all ages from around the world, who must submit a piece for grand symphony orchestra. The competition was announced towards the end of 2003, while winners will be named in December of 2004. A concert of their works will be organized as part of the 11th Lutoslawski Forum and will feature the Symphony Orchestra of the National Philharmonic.
Exhibition of photographs and quotations
Within the time delineated by two important concerts devoted to the compositions of Witold Lutoslawski (February 6 and 7, 2004 - "CONCERTO FOR CELLO" with Arto Noras and May 17 - "Partita" and "Chain 2" with Anne-Sophie Mutter), both organized by the National Philharmonic (Warsaw Philharmonic), the Witold Lutoslawski Society will remind music lovers of the figure of the great composer. Selected quotes from the composer will be presented alongside photographs. Venue: Ballroom of the National Philharmonic - February - May 2004.
Evening of Poetry during the 10th Lutoslawski Forum.
The Witold Lutoslawski Society will take part in the 10th Lutoslawski Forum by organizing an evening of poetry hosted by Julia Hartwig, as well as a screening of documentary films containing Lutoslawski’s music. National Philharmonic - March 2004.

The second edition of a competition open to young musicians (from primary and secondary music schools), organized at Witold Lutoslawski’s place of birth. Lutosiana - a festival focusing on the work of Witold Lutoslawski
A marathon of short concerts (four concerts to be held each day) that will present the composer’s chamber music, compositions for piano, and compositions for children. The concerts will be supplemented with presentations of films, an exhibition of photographs and artworks, as well as meetings with individuals who knew the composer during his lifetime. Film devoted to the life and art of Witold Lutoslawski
Plans include the production of a biographical film popularizing Witold Lutoslawski and his work. The film will be made by the Witold Lutoslawski Society in co-production with Polish State Television (TVP).
Book album titled "Witold Lutoslawski - zycie i tworczosc / Witold Lutoslawski – His Life and Art"
A published album containing various documents, original texts by Witold Lutoslawski (interviews, speeches), and statements about the composer by his friends (A. Wajda, J. Krenz, J. Patkowski). Richly illustrated, the book will include a chronology of the composer’s life as well as a catalogue of his works.
Recordings: last concert ever conducted by the composer (Toronto 1993) concert commemorating Witold Lutoslawski, held during the "Warsaw Autumn" Festival of Contemporary Music (1994) with Anne-Sophie Mutter.
On Monday, September 20, the first Polish arena for the Euro 2012 Cup will open in Poznań. The official ceremony will be honoured with a concert featuring Sting performing with the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra, conducted by Steven Mercurio.
Until September 25 (except for Sundays and holidays), the John the Baptist Archcathedral in Warsaw will host daily organ recitals as part of the 7th edition of the "Grand Organ of the Archicathedral" Festival.
"Dotyk człowieka/Beruehrungen" is the title of the exhibition presenting works of six Polish contemporary artists displayed at the German Embassy in Warsaw (Jazdów street): on view until September 27.
On October 17, the National Museum in Poznań will host the first public presentation of Claude Monet's "Beach in Pourville". The painting was stolen ten years ago. The painting returned to the museum in January 2010 after the folice found the thief.
Jazz pianist Chick Corea will give his only Polish solo concert on November 8 in Zabrze.
