2004: the Year of Witold Gombrowicz
Warsaw, January 1 - December 31, 2004
The resolution was drafted by the Sejm Committee on Culture and the Mass Media: "In celebration of the approaching 100th anniversary of the birth of Witold Gombrowicz, the Sejm of the Polish Republic wishes to honor the memory of this great writer and to underline the fundamental role that his output has played in the development of our national culture. While Poland remained a people's republic, Gombrowicz was among the numerous authors whose works were none too willingly published. His "Dzienniki / Journals", which many critics and readers consider to be his most exceptional work, were officially banned for many years. The writer's complete, uncensored works finally appeared in print after the advent of the current 3rd Republic of Poland. Gombrowicz's works (plays and adaptations of his prose) are frequently staged by Polish theatres. Novels by the author of "Ferdydurke" remain bestsellers and many have been incorporated into the national syllabus. A plentiful program of events has been planned for the Year of Gombrowicz. It is scheduled to include two theatre festivals (Lublin, Radom), academic sessions in Poland and abroad, the publication of a special issue of "Pamiętnik Teatralny" / "Theatre Diary," concerts, design competitions for a Gombrowicz-themed poster and postage stamps, window displays in bookstores throughout the world, exhibitions, publications, and photographs exhibited in display cases in Intercity trains. Based on the decision of Poland's Minister of Culture Waldemar Dąbrowski, the main component of celebrations of the Year of Gombrowicz in Poland will take place in Lublin and consist of a special edition of the Theatre Confrontations, scheduled for October 6-10, 2004. The minister has also appointed a Gombrowicz Committee with Janusz Palikot as its chairperson. Janusz Opryński has been named director of the theatre festival. Honorary members of the Gombrowicz Committee include Rita Gombrowicz, Jan Błoński, and Czesław Miłosz. Source: dziennik.pap.com.pl, www.konfrontacje.pl |
