NIKE 2008 Literary Award

The NIKE Literary Award is a prize for the best book of the year published in Polish. It has been presented since 1997, always for a book published in the previous year. A list of 20 books nominated in 2008 and 7 finalists. The NIKE 2008 has been awarded to Olga Tokarczuk for her book "Bieguni"

The NIKE 2008 has been awarded to Olga Tokarczuk for her book "Bieguni". In the run-up to the announcement of this year's winner, readers of the "Gazeta Wyborcza" daily also awarded, as the best book, the Olga Tokarczuk's book.



Seven final books were announced on September 1, 2008. A list of finalists:

  • "Czarny ogród" - Małgorzata Szejnert; SIW "Znak"

  • "Przelotem" - Urszula Kozioł; Wydawnictwo Literackie
  • "Twarz Tuwima" - Piotr Matywiecki; Wydawnictwo W.A.B.
The winner of the Award will be chosen on October 5, 2008. The event will take place at the Warsaw University Library and will be broadcast on TVP 2 starting at 7:00 pm.



Nominations for the NIKE LITERARY AWARD were announced for the 12th time. Twenty nominated books were presented on May 15, 2008, on the first day of the 53th WARSAW INTERNATIONAL BOOK FAIR. The seven final books will be known at the beginning of September and a book-laureate will be chosen on October 5, 2008.

On Monday, September 20, the first Polish arena for the Euro 2012 Cup will open in Poznań. The official ceremony will be honoured with a concert featuring Sting performing with the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra, conducted by Steven Mercurio.
Until September 25 (except for Sundays and holidays), the John the Baptist Archcathedral in Warsaw will host daily organ recitals as part of the 7th edition of the "Grand Organ of the Archicathedral" Festival.
"Dotyk człowieka/Beruehrungen" is the title of the exhibition presenting works of six Polish contemporary artists displayed at the German Embassy in Warsaw (Jazdów street): on view until September 27.
On October 17, the National Museum in Poznań will host the first public presentation of Claude Monet's "Beach in Pourville". The painting was stolen ten years ago. The painting returned to the museum in January 2010 after the folice found the thief.
Jazz pianist Chick Corea will give his only Polish solo concert on November 8 in Zabrze.
