This year’s PRINCE OF ASTURIAS AWARD in the field of Communication and the Humanities has been granted jointly to Polish writer and journalist Ryszard Kapuscinski and Peruvian theologian and philosopher Gustavo Gutierrez Merino, a jury announced on April 30th in the Spanish city of Oviedo.

The jury recognized Kapuscinski for having been "a model of independent journalism throughout the past half century" and "a model of personally and professionally ethical behavior in a world that, now more than ever, needs independent information free of all manipulation."

According to the jury, Ryszard Kapuscinski and Gustavo Gutierrez Merino are two admirably ethical models of tolerance and humanistic depth. Ryszard Kapuscinski is only the second Pole to receive this prestigious award, considered the greatest distinction one can receive in the Spanish-speaking world. In the past the award laureates included Nelson Mandela, Vaclav Havel, Michaił Gorbaczow, Guenter Grass, Umberto Eco, Stephen Hawking, Arthur Miller, Woody Allen, Placido Domingo. Krzysztof Penderecki was the first individual from Poland to be selected for the distinction, receiving the award in 2001 for his musical achievements.

The Communication and Humanities Award is one of eight Prince of Asturias Awards, which have been granted annually since 1981 by the Prince of Asturias Foundation. The foundation rewards achievement in the fields of art, literature, science, diplomacy, music, and sports. In addition to a monetary award, prizewinners receive reproductions of a sculpture by Spanish artist Joan Miró. Prince Phillip of Asturias, the Spanish heir to the throne, presents the award to winners during a ceremony traditionally held in the fall.

"This is a great honor. First of all, this award obliges, mobilizes and encourages you to continue doing what one is doing in life," Ryszard Kapuscinski told the Polish Press Agency (PAP). "I did not expect to receive this award. There are so many nominees that it is impossible to assume that you will receive it. At the same time, I am tremendously happy because it is a truly prestigious prize. Suffice it to mention that past winners have included such notable individuals as Yehudi Menuhin and Günter Grass."

Kapuscinski is well known in Spain, where Anagrama Publishers will soon release his tenth book to appear in that country. "I think I also owe the prize to the fact that for many years, Gabriel Garcia Marquez and I have been organizing workshops for young reporters and writers from Latin America," stated Kapuscinski.
