The official celebrations of the Chopin Anniversary Year have begun. The 200th anniversary of Fryderyk Chopin's birth will be marked by not one but several special concerts, all of them taking place at the National Philharmonic and spanning two possible dates of composer's birth:
"Today, there's no way of figuring out when Chopin was born, whether it was on February 22 or March 1; and I believe it is not very significant too - after all it's quite appropriate that it took a whole week for the genius to be born...," says Waldemar Dąbrowski, the President of the Celebration Comitee CHOPIN 2010. "Instead of arguing about it, we want to take this opportunity to make the birthday celebrations last as long as possible."
For this week, Warsaw will become stage for the world's greatest pianists. The list of invited artists includes Daniel Barenboim, Piotr Anderszewski, Garrick Ohlsson, Nikolai Demidenko, Dang Thai Son, Evgeny Kissin, Janusz Olejniczak, Murray Perahia, Ivo Pogorelić i Yundi Li. The Birthday celebrations will be launched by the concert of a Polish pianist Rafał Blechacz, the winner of the last Chopin Competition.

The pianists will play with the National Philharmonic Orchestra under Antoni Wit, as well as with Frans Brüggen's Orchestra of the 18th Century, for which the Warsaw concert will also launch their first Polish tour (more...).

All concerts will take place at the concert hall of The National Philharmonic.

On March 1, two special concerts will take place outside National Philharmonic: a Chopin recital in Żelazowa Wola and a concert gala at Grand Theatre - National Opera (more...).
