"Grunwald Days"
Fields of Grunwald near Olsztynek, July 11 - July 15, 2003
languages: Polski  / English

In 1999, a number of Poland's brotherhoods of knights came together to re-stage this most famous battle in the history of the Reczpospolita (Polish Res Publica) on the fields of Grunwald. Since then, multitudes of knights from Poland, Belarus, the Czech Republic, France, Lithuania, Germany and Italy have been gathering at the site each year in mid July and attracting growing crowds of observers.

On July 15, 1410, the army of King Wladyslaw (Ladislaus) Jagiello, supported by the forces of Prince Witold of Lithuania, defeated the armies of the Order of Teutonic Knights lead by Ulrich von Jungingen in one of the greatest battles of the Middle Ages, fought on the fields surrounding the village of Grunwald. In 2002, over forty thousand viewers gathered to see over one thousand knights engage in battle. Apart from the re-staging of the famous battle, the event also features knightly tournaments and contests, recreated medieval military camps, appearances by performing ensembles, folk games, and a medieval market. All of this was born in the mind of Jacek Szymanski, a graphic designer from Warsaw. As a result, Szymanski always plays the role of King Wladyslaw Jagiello.
