Paweł Althamer "Common Task"
Brussels, June 4, 2009
languages: Polski  / English

The project participants arrive in Brussels on a LOT Polish Airlines golden plane designed by the artist.

"Wspólna sprawa / Common Task" is a series of documented social activities in a sci-fi film formula invoking utopian visions.

Almost from the start of his artistic career, Paweł Althamer's works have oscillated between the extremes of figurative sculpture and collective activities drawing others into the creative process. Inviting different social groups to work with him, the artist poses the question of the position and status of an author. He creates a framework, a set of proposals with respect to which the people invited to participate define their identity.

In the "Wspólna sprawa / Common Task" project, Althamer tests ways of perceiving reality as well as interpersonal communication. Participants in the activity - the artist's neighbours - appear in different locations in unusual gold costumes. These joint actions aim to cross mental barriers but also physical boundaries - apart from meetings set in everyday reality, the participants set off on journeys bringing new possibilities and unusual experiences. "Wspólna sprawa / Common Task" is a project of meetings and integration of different social groups, people whose everyday realities do not interpenetrate, who are often excluded from social and cultural rituals.

The project participants arrive in Brussels on 4 June on a LOT Polish Airlines golden plane designed by the artist. Their first stop is the Expo 58 area. The model of an atom is the starting point for a visit to the European Parliament and meetings with the city's residents.

"Wspólna sprawa / Common Task" is being held in Brussels in connection with the 20th anniversary of regained freedom and the fall of communism in Central Europe.
