"Lupa Festival"
Krakow, Warsaw, May 7 - May 24, 2003
languages: Polski  / English

The "Lupa Festival" will primarily be a vast retrospective of the stage director's works.

May is Krystian Lupa month. Three weeks of the month will be filled with a review of the stage director's work. Events will include live and television theatre presentations, an academic session, an exhibition, as well as a master class. All of this will occur under the heading of the LUPA FESTIVAL.

The festival will begin on May 7th and last through the 24th. The Stary Teatr (Old Theatre) in Krakow, the stage upon which Lupa works most frequently, will serve as the center of events. The theatre will host performances of Lupa's Krakow productions: Thomas Bernhard's "KALKWERK" and "RODZENSTWO / SIBLINGS", "BRACIA KARAMAZOW / THE BROTHERS KARAMAZOV" according to Fyodor Dostoevsky, "MISTRZ I MALGORZATA / THE MASTER AND MARGARITA" after Mikhail Bulgakov, and Yasmina Reza's "SZTUKA / ART". Productions directed by Lupa at the Teatr Polski (Polish Theatre) in Wroclaw will be presented at a television studio in Krakow. These will include his stagings of Werner Schwab's "PREZYDENTKI / FIRST LADIES" and Maxim Gorky's "AZYL / ASYLUM". In the meantime, viewers in Warsaw will have an opportunity to see performances of Lupa's rendition of Thomas Bernhard's "WYMAZYWANIE / ERADICATION" at the Teatr Dramatyczny (Dramatic Theatre) as well as the director's newest premiere, Dea Loher's "STOSUNKI KLARY / CLARA'S RELATIONS", at the Teatr Rozmaitosci (Variety Theatre). The festival represents an opportunity to see live performances of a number of the productions the artist has mounted during the last decade. The director's other projects, including Bernhard's "IMMANUEL KANT", "KUSZENIE CICHEJ WERONIKI / THE TEMPTATION OF QUIET VERONICA" after Robert Musil, and "DAMA Z JEDNOROZCEM / THE LADY AND THE UNICORN", based on a short story by Hermann Broch, will be presented during a series of video screenings. In addition, the festival will feature a series of presentations of the director's television theatre productions, including Musil's "MARZYCIELE / DREAMERS" and "W STRONE KLARYSY - SZKICE CZLOWIEKA BEZ WLASCIWOSCI / TOWARDS CLARISSA - SKETCHES OF A MAN WITHOUT FEATURES" by the same author.

The LUPA FESTIVAL will primarily be a vast retrospective of the stage director's works. It will be accompanied by an international academic session devoted to various aspects of Lupa's artistic activities. Discussions will focus on the reception of his productions in Germany and France, his work at the State Higher School of Theatre in Krakow, and the various themes and interpretive directions that appear in his productions.

Krystian Lupa will also lead a series of directing workshops for theatre school students from Krakow, Paris and Strasbourg. The Artemis Gallery will hold an exhibition titled KRYSTIAN LUPA - MIEDZY ALCHEMIA A RELIGIA / KRYSTIAN LUPA - BETWEEN ALCHEMY AND RELIGION, consisting of drawings, designs and photographs by the artist, and Krakow's Art Bunker will host a promotion of Beata Matkowska-Swies's book "Podroz do Nieuchwytnego - rozmowy z Krystianem Lupa" / "Journey to the Ungraspable - Discussions with Krystian Lupa."
