11TH LUTOSLAWSKI FORUM

From February 12-18, 2005, the National Philharmonic in Warsaw will host the 11. FORUM LUTOSLAWSKIEGO / 11th LUTOSLAWSKI FORUM. The inaugural concert of the 11th FORUM will feature a performance of Lutoslawski's "GRY WENECKIE / VENETIAN GAMES" (1961), which was a milestone work in the composer's oeuvre, marking the beginning of his aleatoric period. In addition, Gabriel Chmura, director of the Narodowa Orkiestra Symfoniczna Polskiego Radia / Polish Radio National Symphony Orchestra in Katowice, has structured the program of the inaugural evening so as to include a number of works by composers who remain largely unknown to Polish music aficionados. Especially noteworthy among this group is Mieczyslaw Weinberg, a close associate of Dmitri Shostakovich who passed away eight years ago. Now, Gabriel Chmura is making an effort to remind us of the very abundant legacy of this composer, which includes twenty-two symphonies. Russian cellist and contemporary music performer Ivan Monighetti will perform Weinberg's cello concerto of 1948, which the composer dedicated to Mstislav Rostropovich. During the FORUM's final concert, the Polish Radio Orchestra conducted by Wojciech Rajski will perform, among other works, the "WARIACJE SYMFONICZNE / SYMPHONIC VARIATIONS", a piece Lutoslawski composed in is youth, when he interned with Witold Maliszewski. Also slated to perform is Roman Lasocki, an exceptional Polish violinist and professor of the Music Academies in Warsaw and Katowice, who will offer an interpretation of Dmitri Shostakovich's starkly contrasting "KONCERT SKRZYPCOWY / VIOLIN CONCERTO" (1947/8). This gloomy work was condemned and rejected by the Association of Soviet Composers upon its completion but found an exceptional guardian and propagator in the person of virtuoso David Oistrakh, who was the first to perform it. Supplementing the varied program of the evening will be "HARMONIUM" (1980/81) by American composer John Adams, an expansive, three-part work for choir and orchestra whose sources lie in the poetry of John Donne and Emily Dickinson.

Kwadrofonik at Crossculture Festival
The European Film Academy (EFA) has announced its choice of international EFA Ambassadors. Among the selected distinguished personalities from the world of European film there is Maciej Stuhr. The Polish actor will represent EFA and the European Film Awards at various prestigious events.
The Berlin Maxim Gorki Theatre will show Heinrich von Kleist's "Amphitryon", directed by Jan Bosse (November 19, 2009) and Fritz Kater's "Haeven", directed by Armin Petras (November 21, 2009) at Stary Teatr in Cracow. The shows are part of the collaboration between the two theatres, called "Wanderlust".
18th History Book Fairs will take place on November 26 - Novemer 29, 2009, in Warsaw. The inauguratory press conference "History Book Fairs - the new beginning" starts on November 23, 2009 at 12:00 p.m. in Kubicki Arcades at the Royal Castle.
40 short documentary films from 11 countries have been qualified for competition in the 13th International Film Festival "Off Cinema". The Festival starts on November 18, 2009, in Poznań.
The former headquarters of the Polish United Workers' Party's Central Comitee, a monumetal building located in downtown Warsaw, near the de Gaulle traffic circle, was on November 16, 2009, inscribed on the list of registered monuments of the Masovian Voivodeship.
On November 13, 2009, at the Academy of Fine Arts in Wrocław, the Minister of Culture and National Heritage, Bohdan Zdrojewski, signed an agreement, according to which the Ministry shall co-fund the construction of the Centre of Applied Arts and Innovation Centre at the Academy of Fine Arts.
