"Silent Cinema Days Festival"
Warsaw, "Illusion" Theatre, April 11 - April 13, 2003
languages: Polski  / English

The three-day event at Warsaw's "Iluzjon" / "Illusion" Theatre will consist of screenings of more than a dozen films from Poland, France, Germany and Russia.

A screening of the oldest extant Polish film, titled "TAJEMNICA POKOJU NR 100 / THE SECRET OF ROOM 100" and featuring Aleksander Zelwerowicz and Stefan Jaracz, will open the first SILENT CINEMA DAYS Festival this Friday. The three-day event at Warsaw's "Iluzjon" / "Illusion" Theatre will consist of screenings of more than a dozen films from Poland, France, Germany and Russia.

The presentation as a whole has been divided into several categories. The "Odnalezione filmy polskie" / "Rediscovered Polish Films" series will include screenings of "MOCNY CZLOWIEK / A STRONG MAN", directed by Henryk Szaro in 1929, and the oldest extant Polish film "TAJEMNICA POKOJU NR 100 / THE SECRET OF ROOM 100", produced by an unknown director in 1914.

During the scheduled "Night of Horrors," audiences will have an opportunity to see the German films "CIENIE / SHADOWS", made by Arthur Robinson in 1923, "CZAROWNICE / WITCHES", directed by Benjamin Christensen in 1922, and Paul Leni's "KOT I KANAREK / THE CAT AND THE CANARY" from 1927.

Organizers have also prepared screenings consisting of seven short comedies starring some of the greatest comedians in the history of the silent cinema, including Max Linder, Buster Keaton Charlie Chaplin and Luis Fazenda.

The concept for the festival came from the National Film Library. "This will be a voyage to the beginnings of cinema. We will effectively demonstrate how a range of film genres were shaped, including the Western, the horror film, science fiction films, comedies and animations. All screenings will be accompanied by live music that will give these films, some of which date back almost one hundred years, a new, contemporary dimension," says the organizers. Featured musicians will include Urszula Dudziak, Voo Voo and Maciek Malenczuk. The festival's special guest will be Frenchman Pierre Courtet-Cohl, grandson of Emile Cohl, one of the first people in history to make animated films. Courtet-Cohl will present a collection of films and an exhibition devoted to his grandfather's achievements.

The SILENT FILM DAYS are part of a campaign titled "Film w starym kinie" / "Film in the Old Cinema" which is being organized by "Film" monthly and the National Film Library. The aim of the campaign is to collect funds to be used in renovating pre-war Polish films in the collection of the National Film Library. First Lady Jolanta Kwasniewska is the campaign's honorary patron.
