"Crises of the Communist System 1953-1981"

The conference's main purpose is to present the events of 1956 in a wider perspective of other crises of the communist system - from mass protests in the GDR in 1953 to the crisis in Poland in 1980s. The second, not less important goal is to summarize the current state of research on the history of crises of the communist system, to facilitate cooperation between institutions and individuals involved in the research on this topic and to raise public awareness of the subject matter. To commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the events of 1956 in Poland and Hungary in Warsaw on October 20-21, 2006 will be held an international conference "Crises of the Communist System 1953-1981". The conference will proceed in the Library of Warsaw University (Dobra 56/66). The conference's main purpose is to present the events of 1956 in a wider perspective of other crises of the communist system - from mass protests in the GDR in 1953 to the crisis in Poland in 1980s. The second, not less important goal is to summarize the current state of research on the history of crises of the communist system, to facilitate cooperation between institutions and individuals involved in the research on this topic and to raise public awareness of the subject matter. The conference's programme will also include panel discussions, an exhibition on crises of communist system in Poland (1956-1981), as well as screening of documentary films about the 1956 crises in Poland and Hungary. All conference events (sessions, panel discussions, exhibition, films) will be open to the public with free admission. The official languages of the conference will be English, German and Polish (simultaneous translation).

![]() On Monday, September 20, the first Polish arena for the Euro 2012 Cup will open in Poznań. The official ceremony will be honoured with a concert featuring Sting performing with the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra, conducted by Steven Mercurio. Until September 25 (except for Sundays and holidays), the John the Baptist Archcathedral in Warsaw will host daily organ recitals as part of the 7th edition of the "Grand Organ of the Archicathedral" Festival. "Dotyk człowieka/Beruehrungen" is the title of the exhibition presenting works of six Polish contemporary artists displayed at the German Embassy in Warsaw (Jazdów street): on view until September 27. On October 17, the National Museum in Poznań will host the first public presentation of Claude Monet's "Beach in Pourville". The painting was stolen ten years ago. The painting returned to the museum in January 2010 after the folice found the thief. Jazz pianist Chick Corea will give his only Polish solo concert on November 8 in Zabrze.
