The museum's beginnings date back to 1857, when the Society of the Friends of Science in Poznan founded the Museum of Polish and Slavic Antiquities, which was then called the Mielzynski Family Museum; in 1904, it was renamed the Kaiser Friedrich Museum, which included a gallery of Atanazy Raczynski's European painting; since 1919, it has operated as the Wielkopolskie Museum, and since 1950 it has been known as the National Museum.
