The Tadeusz Baird Young Composers Competition (formerly called the Youth Competition of the Polish Composer's Union) is organized annually since 1958. Its aim is to give a start to young Polish composers and to encourage them to work and take independent initiative.

The TADEUSZ BAIRD YOUNG COMPOSERS COMPETITION (formerly called the YOUTH COMPETITION OF THE POLISH COMPOSERS' UNION) is organized annually since 1958. Its aim is to give a start to young Polish composers and to encourage them to work and take independent initiative. Until 1990, the event's rules stated that the competition piece is to be any piece with duration over 5 minutes. The participants received a 3-month stipend to compose from the Ministry of Culture and Art. The grand prize of the competition was a stipend to a foreign country, the second prize - participation in a music festival organized in one of the eastern block countries, while the award of distinction – a free stay at the "WARSAW AUTUMN" festival.

Since 1990, the Ministry has withdrawn from awarding creative stipends. From that time, the Grand Prize, the Tadeusz Baird Prize of 2,500 dollars to be dedicated for further studies in composition is funded by Alina Sawicka-Baird, the wife of the deceased composer, Tadeusz Baird. The two second prizes and the award of distinction are financed by the Head Board of the Polish Composers' Union.

Since 1990, the BAIRD COMPETITION is open to all Polish composers who are not yet 35 years of age on the day of the submission deadline (formerly it was addressed to graduates of composition departments of the State Higher Schools of Music). The object of the competition is different every year.
