SUPPLEMENT is the story of love between two young people. The boy is torn by doubt. He wants to avoid becoming average, one the many "rats" in the chase for material wealth. He thinks seriously about entering a monastery and is afraid of the toils of everyday life. The girl goes to night school and earns money as a dressing room attendant on film sets and during fashion shows. She honestly fears that she may be a barrier to the boy's self-fulfillment. She also wonders if she should not encourage him to be bolder in life. A supplement is an addition designed to fill in something that was previously incomplete. One might think that SUPPLEMENT is an addition to Zanussi's previous film ZYCIE JAKO SMIERTELNA CHOROBA PRZENOSZONA DROGA PLCIOWA / LIFE AS A FATAL SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASE, but this would only by part of the truth. "In LIFE... I barely sketched the story of the young characters. I had to concentrate on the character of the dying doctor and cut many of the scenes with the young actors out of the movie at a stage when it was practically done. I then thought about something that I remembered from the 19th century novels of writers like Balzac, who would take a peripheral character from one book and turn him or her into the central character of another." (Krzysztof Zanussi). Written and directed by Krzysztof Zanussi, cinematography by Edward Klosinski, music by Wojciech Kilar. Featuring Monika Krzywkowska, Pawel Okraska, and others. Produced by TOR Film Studio and distributed by Apollo Film. In cinemas on April 12, 2002. |
